Saving money is something everyone on the planet is concerned with and when an option is readily available, it’s a good idea to research the pros and cons. In this case, the money-saving option is switching from traditional electric power to solar energy. That’s right, the power of the sun can light up your wallet with significant savings. Find out more about the process and what it can mean for your budget and your future.

Solar Photovoltaic Programs and Incentives

If you are an Oncor customer, you’re working with a regulated service provider that handles over 10 million Texas customers, including those in Dallas. The company delivers reliable electricity using the most extensive distribution and transmission Texas system.

In an effort to continue promoting the rethinking of energy usage to get the best value for your dollars, Oncor has a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Program in place so you can take advantage of savings while providing the energy needs for your home.

To be eligible for the incentive program from Oncor, your solar PV system must be a new system connecting to the power grid, meet Oncor’s solar PV and interconnection requirements, and be able to meet a minimum threshold of energy performance.

You can find a list of providers in your area using Oncor’s Take a Load Off Texas search page. Once you’ve selected a service provider who is enrolled in the program, you’ll work as a team to determine the best solar system for your property. Your provider will submit an application for review and if approved by Oncor, you’ll be notified and your incentive placed in hold. Oncor offers both residential and commercial incentives.

The next step is having the solar system installed and a final application submitted. If the system passes inspection, a check for the incentive will be sent to your provider.

If your current power supply comes from a retail supplier, or if you’re considering switching plans to another retail supplier, check the Power to Choose site for a listing of providers in your area. Each provider is listed along with current rates, scorecard of complaints, terms of service, plans and prices, fixed or variable rates, short or long term plans, available deals, and information regarding renewable energy. Use the filters on the site to search for 100 percent renewable companies and those with the highest customer satisfaction ratings.

It’s a good idea to compare several plans, read the fine print, understand and know about any hidden fees and be clear if there is a cancellation fee.

Advantages of Installing Solar in Dallas

Texas is one of the U.S. states that uses a lot of energy and why renewable resources are an important part of the state’s plan of action. While wind turbines have played a significant role in providing Texans with energy, solar power is making its own inroads. With federal, state, and city incentives in place, making the change from traditional to solar makes a lot of “cents.” You can find out more about the Texas tax code at the State Energy Conservation Office (SECO) with the latest information.

The pros of solar panel energy mean you’ll be using sustainable energy that is with us every day. Even on a cloudy day, the sun produces energy and since the resource is free, customers reap the benefits of paying lower charges versus being on the rollercoaster ride that makes up the constantly changing rates of fossil fuels.

As noted, solar panel systems can be purchased or leased. Another plus is for homes that may not be suited for rooftop solar paneling. If this is your situation, not to worry. Solar panels can also be installed on the ground as long as your property has adequate room.

The impact on the environment of homeowners and businesses using natural resources is immeasurable. With no pollutants and gas emissions emitted from solar paneling (plus it is quiet to operate) the air quality is improved keeping the planet green and clean.

Things to Consider Before Installing Solar

As far as any negative issues with solar energy, there are a few solar disadvantages to consider. An initial concern is the cost and installation of solar panels. But keep in mind, the investment will pay off in time.

If your property is heavily treed and landscaped, solar panels may not be an option as location is a key factor in the placement of panels. During dreary winter days, cloudy and foggy days, collecting energy may be problematic for solar panels. More panels may be necessary to produce an adequate supply of energy.

Solar energy is an on-going work in progress meaning new technology is on the cutting edge to make renewable energy sources like solar panels more reliable, efficient, and built from material that does not create pollution.

Making a commitment to solar panel energy is a big step and a big investment but you’ll earn the investment back over time. If a long-term commitment to solar is a concern, you also have the choice of leasing the panels. You will not earn any incentives but you will still save money with a lower utility bill.
