I made an expensive mistake on October 22, 2018, spending $3,800 on Leaf Filter gutter guards. After thorough research, I chose Leaf Filter—not because it was the cheapest option, but because of the company’s bold guarantees and the glowing endorsement from the sales representative. Here’s what they promised:
Company Guarantee:
• “Filters out everything except water.”
• “Never clean your gutters again.”
• “Once our ladders go up, yours can go down forever.”
• Lifetime guarantee (transferable).
• Money-back guarantee.
Sales Representative’s Assurance:
• “Out of 1,200 sales, I’ve had only two complaints, and both were resolved by adjusting the angle of the gutter guard.”
Reality Check
Unfortunately, these promises couldn’t have been further from the truth. I still climb a ladder three times a year to clear debris off my gutters. Just last week, I removed enough to fill a 15-gallon garbage bin.
When I contacted Leaf Filter customer service, I entered a frustrating cycle of unanswered calls, multiple holds, and pointless transfers. After dozens of calls and emails, I finally reached the sales representative—who greeted me with: “Why are you calling me?” A clear sign he had no interest in helping after pocketing my $3,800.
The back-and-forth with customer service continued. After multiple failed attempts, they finally scheduled a maintenance visit—17 days later. When the technician arrived, he manually cleaned my gutters. His words were revealing: “This happens all the time. The sales team makes promises, and maintenance is left to clean up the mess.” His advice? Just keep calling whenever your gutters clog.
So, I did. But after my third call, I was told there would now be a $95 service fee for future visits.
The Final Straw
In May 2020, I reached out to the sales representative, reminding him of our kitchen table discussion with my wife. He had assured us that clogged gutters would never be an issue—and if they ever were, customer service would fix it without question, without charge.
His response? “Those aren’t clogged gutters. Those are covered gutters. The record-breaking May rains have caused abnormal fallout from your trees.”
$3,800—and now we’re arguing semantics?
Lesson Learned
Looking back, I could have paid a professional $200 per year to clean my gutters and avoided this ongoing nightmare. Instead, I’ve spent years chasing a company that refuses to honor its promises.
I intend to file complaints with the State Attorney General, the Better Business Bureau, and multiple online platforms to ensure others don’t fall victim to Leaf Guard’s empty guarantees.
NOTE: in my review, I rate Leaf Filter a "1" because 0 was not an option.
I so wanted LeafFilter’s claims about not having to climb another ladder to tend to my gutters to be true… In the fall of 2018 we had just installed a metal roof over existing shingles. We had gutters in place and LeafFilter promised to install their screen assemblies over these gutters. Other gutter companies I was aware of which claimed to keep your gutter clear, required replacement of the entire gutter so they could fit their curved top on their gutter. I didn’t want to replace my existing gutters, so LeafFilter’s product was very appealing.
Shortly after getting LeafFilter installed, it became apparent that my two roof valleys, in conjunction with a steep roof (45 deg) and the new metal roof, were bringing too much water, too fast for the LeafFilter screens to accept. Under warranty (no charge back then), I had LeafFilter come out a couple times trying to correct this. First, they replaced the very fine mesh screen in the corners of the valleys, with coarser screen. When it was obvious that wasn’t the solution, I had them come out again. They then installed a “gusher guard” at each valley to keep the water from jumping over the entire gutter at the valleys (Figure 1). It quickly became apparent the gusher guard would hold leaves, seeds, etc. on the gutter screen. As a result, for the last several years, I’ve kept an extension ladder leaned against the house all year long, as I need to climb up to clear the valleys frequently (so much for not having to climb ladders anymore...). Moving the ladder from one valley to the other to get both cleared. In late March I was clearing Maple tree ‘twirly’ seeds. Then in late April I climbed the ladder to clear Pecan blossoms (Figures 2 & 3). Each tree drops its leaves on difference schedules in the fall and the Pin Oaks spread out their drop all winter long, requiring many more trips up the ladder.
As time went on, the LeafFilter screens began to clog with dirty looking gunk that restricted the amount of water able to penetrate the screen, especially in periods of heavy rain (Figures 4 & 5). I seem to remember the saleswoman representing LeafFilter saying that the screen used a stainless steel that DID NOT promote growth of anything that would clog the screen. In reality, less and less water actually makes it into the gutters and areas of the gutter that are more clogged just overflow, causing washouts in the ground under these spots. So today, as I write this, we have heavy rain and large areas of the gutter are overflowing, washing out dirt near the house. Hence, I have to wonder, what was the purpose of the gutters in the first place???
The next step of degradation in my LeafFilter installation began in 2024, as some of the screens started to loosen up from the cap strip that holds their outside edge (Figure 6). Then in a strong wind, one of these screens came about 90% loose and now just flops in the wind (Figure 7). Finally at this stage of degradation, debris will be able to enter the gutter (note the Maple ‘twirly’ and Pecan blossoms caught in the plastic that underlies the screen in Figure 8). (This is what I now understand the LeafFilter warranty really implies; that nothing can get into your gutter - which unfortunately, now includes much of the water.) Now, with a flopping screen section, it seemed I had a condition that their warranty would cover. I again called the LeafFilter folks, only to learn their “lifetime” warranty, now requires a $95 service fee to come out and look at my LeafFilter installation. I told their service rep that I refused to pay such a fee, since it wasn’t part of the warranty they offered at the time I purchased mine. I asked to speak to their CEO as I’d like to show them my gutters, but the people that answer the phone couldn’t make that happen.
It is blatantly obvious to me that there are major flaws in LeafFilter’s design. I pointed out what I knew about a class-action lawsuit that I received some info on. The judgement against LeafFilter didn’t seem to be a remedy to owners. Only the ability to have LeafFilter come out and clean an owner’s gutters a time or two. Nothing to actually fix their flawed concept and be a permanent solution. Anyone accepting this judgement would give up their future ability to sue LeafFilter. I didn’t respond to this non-remedy.
Anyone reading this and considering purchasing LeafFilter, consider this your heads –up on what to expect.
One day after a recent storm, we noticed that our gutters were dripping a good amount of water. My husband climbed up on the ladder to have a look at the gutters and found some oak tree pollen pods on top of the gutter at the back of our house. We both wondered why these were on our "never have to clean the gutters again" gutters. We called the company and they said that for $95 they would come out and have a look at our gutters. My husband asked about their so-called lifetime warranty, and he was told that the warranty only applied for clogging INSIDE of the gutter, not what was on the outside. So in reality,my husband had to get up on top of a ladder and clean their so-called "never have to clean the gutters again" gutters and it's likely he may have to do this again at some point in time.
Please stop the deceptive advertising. These gutters are NOT self-cleaning. And everyone should know that if you do get leaves or anything else on your gutters, they claim they aren't responsible for the gutters not working as their sales brochure claims they will.
