The executive team at Modernize is a group of passionate, teamwork-driven leaders with decades of combined experience in the home improvement and performance marketing niche. Together, their goal is to revolutionize the home improvement space by providing a seamless digital solution for homeowners and professional contractors to connect with one another. Our leaders support teams spread across several different departments - including business development and sales, customer success, marketing, editorial, and engineering.
Alan Godfrey

Alan Godfrey

Senior Vice President

Alan is responsible for revenue and profitability growth for the business unit at Modernize. He joined Modernize as the executive vice president of revenue and corporate development in 2017, when he led the company through triple-digit revenue growth, culminating in the acquisition by QuinStreet in 2020.

Alan has a successful track record of leading pre- and post-IPO companies through rapid revenue and market expansion, and has led more than a dozen mergers and acquisitions as an operating executive and independent consultant. He has a B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics from Texas A&M University, and is an active Board Member, Advisor, and Angel Investor in technology start-up companies.

Jeff Barnes

Jeff Barnes

Vice President, General Manager of Core Services

Jeff Barnes leads sales, account management, customer success, and revenue in Modernize core services, including windows, solar, roofing, and HVAC. Since 2015, he has served as the director of enterprise sales and account management, helping to develop the largest customer network in the core trade verticals. Prior to working with Modernize, Jeff started in home services and leadership in 2008 as the regional general manager for Clearwire in the Northwest. Jeff carries over a decade of leadership experience in pre- and post-IPO environments and thrives in the digital technology space.

Jeff graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Political Science and a sales certification from the Foster School of Business. He went on to hone his craft through the University of Texas McCombs School of Business, Executive Education Program. 

Josh Smykal

Josh Smykal

Vice President, Business Operations

Josh is responsible for maximizing the value of Modernize offerings to homeowners and contractors alike through streamlined business processes and the management of cross-functional strategic initiatives. He joined Modernize in 2014 and has served in multiple roles spanning client success, sales, marketing, call center operations, and as leader of the project management office. He has over 15 years of expertise in the home services and financial services industries.

Josh holds a degree in Business Administration from American Intercontinental University and volunteers his time to coach and mentor youth athletes.

Jamie Smith

Jamie Smith

Senior Director, Client Acquisition Services

Jamie focuses on multi-channel demand generation marketing strategy for Modernize clients and spearheads the Modernize brand promise initiative for both homeowners and clients. Prior to joining Modernize, she was the director of marketing services at Motiv, a marketing automation and CRM management firm where she has helped many B2C and B2B organizations, including NASCAR, Powerball, NFL Alumni, and Johnson & Johnson with their marketing programs.

Jamie graduated with a degree in Organizational Communications from the University of North Carolina and obtained a certificate from the Management Development Program at Harvard Business School.

Robert Skorpil

Director, Organic Marketing

Robert joined Modernize in June 2019 and has led the strategy and execution of organic search, social media, and content marketing teams to more than double traffic to modernize.com. He has more than 20 years of experience developing websites, user-friendly content, and successful online marketing strategies for companies of all sizes, including the rebranding, website design, and comprehensive B2C/B2B digital marketing plan for Grande Communications.

Robert holds a J.D. degree from the University of Southern California and a B.A. in Letters from the University of Oklahoma, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.
