“My home is ice cold. I think my heater needs to be repaired or replaced.”

Furnace Repair vs. Furnace Replacement

When you run into furnace problems, your furnace contractor will be able to help you decide if furnace repair or furnace replacement will be your most cost effective fix to get your home heating system back in action. As a rule of thumb on deciding between furnace repair and furnace replacement use the following logic to determine your plan of action.

  • When deciding between repairing or replacing your home furnace you will want to base it off of the age of your furnace. It would not make sense to spend $1,800 dollars for furnace repair on an 18-year-old system that might cost $3,000 to fully replace. If your furnace has used up 3/4 of its life expectancy, do not spend more than 1/3 of the cost of a replacement furnace on repair costs for an old unit.

If you need to find out the age of your current gas furnace, simply find the metal identification plate on the inside of the furnace’s chamber door. Write down your model and serial number and either do research online or call the furnace manufacturer to find out the exact age of your furnace.

Before You Call a Furnace Repair Person

If you think your furnace may be having issues needing to be repaired, here are a few things you can check before finding a furnace repair person near you:

  • Make sure your thermostat is working properly. Sometimes if your furnace’s thermostat has issues it will cause your furnace to malfunction as well. These issues could be caused by faulty wiring or a low battery
  • You will want to check your furnaces air flow. Sometimes your furnace’s filter may need to be replaced so that air can flow freely.
  • Check your circuit breaker box, if you recently had a power outage it could have blown the fuses directly working with your furnace to power it.

Quite a bit of research goes into replacing or repairing a gas furnace such as selecting the right equipment and choosing the right contractor for the job. Being thorough and doing your homework will increase the chances of a smooth furnace installation or repair. Use our informative HVAC contractor checklist during your HVAC installation to make things easier on you and your furnace repair person.

Finding Furnace Repair Near You

When you are looking for furnace repair in your area and getting price quotes from multiple HVAC contractors, it is easy to get lost in translation. Asking a furnace repair person the right questions is key to getting best price for your furnace repair (or replacement) should it need it.

  • Ask for several furnace repair cost estimates from local HVAC contractors. Be careful to not always go with the lowest price bid, as you could potentially get inferior service and low performance furnace parts or units.
  • Ask your local contractors what their furnace equipment markup is. A cheaper labor price might include hidden markups on the furnace parts
  • When you have your furnace repaired or replaced, you may want to ask if your HVAC contractor can also replace your thermostat. Newer technologies work better with new furnaces.
  • Ask for a detailed estimate or proposal that outlines the entire scope of the furnace repair  job including equipment manufacturers with model numbers and scheduled completion dates. You can then price check against other contractors in your area as well as check average prices for the same brand of furnace.
  • Ask your furnace repair contractor to go over your furnace repair or replacement cost estimate including mathematical calculations used to size the natural gas furnace. Verify that their calculations are correct to avoid buying an undersized or oversized gas furnace which can become costly by overworking or underworking and raising the price of your average monthly energy bill.
  • Ask for name brand furnace equipment and parts for your furnace. Cheap knockoffs often fail and can leave your home cold and uncomfortable in the winter months and causing you to have to pay for more repair services.

How long does a new furnace usually last?

According to the National Association of Home Builders, the expected life span of a forced-air gas furnace is between 15 and 20 years.
