Picture windows are designed for architectural appeal and for allowing more light into a home. Most of them don’t open, so they can be built in a wide variety of sizes and are often found in the living room, kitchen and more. If you’re considering installing picture windows, you have a lot of options from small to large aesthetic windows.

Picture Window Sizes

Picture windows have long been one of the most popular replacement types, which means just about every manufacturer makes them in a wide variety of sizes. Here are the standard ranges of widths and heights you can expect to find.

  • Picture window widths:  24″ min to 96″ max
  • Picture window heights: 12″ min to 96″ max

As you might expect, the larger the window, the more expensive it gets. You can check out our guide to picture window costs to learn more and to see a chart of picture window prices organized by size.

What Are the Most Common Sizes?

Large picture windows in a living room

Picture windows are often chosen for their aesthetic appeal, and their sizes can vary widely depending on the desired view and the location in the house. That said, there are some standard sizes that manufacturers often produce due to demand. Here are some of the most common sizes for picture windows:

  1. 24 x 36 inches (2 feet x 3 feet): Often used in smaller spaces or combined with other window types.
  2. 36 x 36 inches (3 feet x 3 feet): A square window size common in many homes.
  3. 48 x 48 inches (4 feet x 4 feet): A larger square window that offers a broader view.
  4. 60 x 48 inches (5 feet x 4 feet): Common for living rooms or spaces where a wider view is preferred.
  5. 72 x 60 inches (6 feet x 5 feet): One of the larger standard sizes, often found in homes with grand views or open concepts.

How Large Can This Window Be?

Arrangement of picture windows in various sizes in a living room

First, a note about especially large picture windows. As windows get larger, they need to withstand the same forces (e.g., wind) with a larger surface area. This requires stronger, thicker glass and more robust framing materials, especially if the window is double or triple glazed. Special equipment or techniques may be needed to install a large picture window, which can significantly increase the cost.

Also, as the window size increases, the weight of the glass also increases, requiring a stronger frame and possibly additional structural support in your home.

That said, for residential applications, picture windows often max out around 8 feet x 10 feet (96 inches x 120 inches). There might be specialized manufacturers that can go a bit larger, but that’s getting into the realm of custom windows or manufacturers who specialize in floor-to-ceiling windows instead.

If you’re interested in a very large picture window, you should consult with a professional.
