Muntins for Windows: The What and the Why

When shopping for windows, you will have to decide if you want a full frame of uninterrupted glass or muntins. Muntins for windows are the lines you see that divide (or at least appear to divide) the window into individual lites.

For an unimpeded view, avoid divided frames when installing different window styles. On the other hand, if you prefer the classic look of window lites (often called panes), here are several options to choose from.

Just What Are Muntins for Windows?

Muntins vs mullions are often confused or assumed to be interchangeable. However, they each serve a distinct purpose. So, first, ensure that muntins are really what you want for your window or if you mean mullions instead.

Windows with authentic muntins are rarer and more expensive than faux muntins.  Instead of buying a single piece of glass, you are essentially buying lots of small pieces of glass that have been combined into a window. That means your window requires more labor to manufacture, more attention to detail to ensure there are no air gaps between each muntin, and so, ultimately, more money.

Pro: They are the best choice for an old-fashioned look. If you have an older home or a historic homes, you should consider investing in muntins for windows.

Con: In addition to being more expensive and having more weak points, muntins obstruct your view more than windows of open glass.

Attached Grid Windows: The Muntin Look for Less

For a realistic divided look, attached grid windows have a full pane of glass with muntins glued to their surface. They appear to be divided just like authentic muntins on windows, but they are more affordable and generally more efficient because there are not so many spots for air to get inside or out.

Pro: You get the same authentic look for a fraction of the cost.

Con: Close inspection will reveal these to be glued on. If authenticity or historic accuracy is important for the home you have, these may not cut it.

Faux Muntins

Finally, there are faux muntins. These grids sit in front of the window as part of the frame and often do not even touch the glass. Faux muntins built into the frame are less popular than their glued-on counterparts.

Pro: You can easily put a cloth in behind the separators and clean the entire glass all at once, which makes it much less of a hassle than cleaning each individual piece.

Con: They are the least convincing option in terms of a realistic look.
