Spring Is Already Driving Homeowner Decisions: What This Data Means for Contractors

Spring has long been the busiest season in home services, but new homeowner data shows something important: by the time spring arrives, many homeowners have already been thinking about their projects for months.

Modernize surveyed over 8,000 homeowners about their spring home improvement plans, motivations, and decision timelines. The results reveal a clear trend, homeowners are entering spring highly motivated but still navigating pricing concerns, contractor comparisons, and project timing.

For contractors, this creates both opportunity and urgency.

Kitchen and Window Projects Lead Spring Demand

When asked which home improvement projects they are most focused on completing this spring, homeowners reported that interior remodels and exterior upgrades are driving the most interest.

Kitchen and bathroom remodels led the list, followed closely by window replacements and roofing projects. Together, these categories represent the majority of spring project demand.

This aligns with seasonal homeowner behavior. After winter, homeowners begin noticing aging materials, rising energy costs, and spaces they want refreshed before summer.

For contractors, the takeaway is simple: spring marketing should prioritize high-intent categories like remodeling, windows, and roofing.

Spring Motivation Is Strong, But Timing Still Matters

Seasonal momentum plays a major role in homeowner decision-making.

Nearly 40% of homeowners say they feel significantly more motivated to improve their home in spring, while another 18% say they feel somewhat more motivated.

This means nearly 60% of homeowners experience a seasonal surge in project motivation, reinforcing why spring remains the industry’s most active season.

However, motivation does not always translate immediately into action.

Many homeowners are still navigating pricing research, comparing estimates, and deciding whether to move forward now or later in the year.

Homeowners Are Planning Projects Months in Advance

One of the most important insights for contractors is how early homeowners begin thinking about projects.

The largest group of respondents, nearly 32%, said they first started thinking about their project one to two months ago, while nearly 24% said they began planning over six months ago.

This means a significant portion of homeowners enter spring with projects that have already been on their minds for months.

Contractors who engage homeowners earlier in their research phase are far more likely to capture those projects.

Pricing and Budget Uncertainty Are the Biggest Barriers

Despite strong motivation, homeowners still face several hurdles before scheduling work.

The most common reasons homeowners delay scheduling include:

  • Waiting for better pricing
  • Budget uncertainty
  • Comparing multiple estimates

Together, these factors highlight the importance of clear pricing, fast estimates, and transparent communication.

Contractors who simplify the decision process can dramatically shorten the timeline between research and project start.

Peace of Mind Is the Real Outcome Homeowners Want

When homeowners think about completing a project before summer, the most common response isn’t resale value or aesthetics, it’s peace of mind.

More than 36% say finishing their project represents peace of mind, followed by improved comfort and energy efficiency.

This insight highlights an important messaging opportunity for contractors. Homeowners aren’t just buying a project, they’re buying reassurance that their home will be ready for the season ahead.

What This Means for Contractors

The data reinforces a familiar truth: spring demand doesn’t begin when the weather changes, it begins when homeowners start researching.

Contractors who succeed during peak season typically do three things well:

  • Show up early in the homeowner research journey
  • Provide fast, transparent pricing
  • Build trust through clear communication and follow-up

With homeowners already thinking about projects months before summer, the contractors who engage early will be best positioned to capture the season’s strongest demand.
