Are you doing a home improvement project?
Modernize can pair you with three to four pros in your area, so you can compare options and save time and money.
Once you get started on a renovation or redecorating project, it’s easy for the cost to get out of hand. As your vision for the space comes together, the genius ideas keep coming until you’ve reached an astronomical price tag.
Luckily, staying in your budget doesn’t have to mean skimping on quality or originality. Here are some of the best places to shop for affordable furniture and décor, both in store and online.
TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods
TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods are all discount retail stores whose inventory comes from the overstocked items at larger department stores. Many of the items in the store come from name recognizable brand names, but at a fraction of the cost. TJ Maxx and Marshalls carry clothes, shoes, and accessories ,as well as a selection of small furniture and home décor. HomeGoods is specifically a home décor retailer and carries everything from vases and mirrors to ottomans, armchairs, and large area rugs.
The only downside to these stores is that each location gets their inventory from different sources, so each one has a slightly different inventory and they do not offer online shopping. If you have one of these stores near you, check them out before you commit to designer prices. These stores are especially great for smaller accessories like throw pillows, candles, and lamps, which you can find for up to 50% less than what you might pay elsewhere.
Overstock
Overstock is like an online version of TJ Maxx or Marshalls, but with an even larger inventory. While Overstock includes just about any kind of item you could want, there are constantly great deals on home goods, from furniture to curtains to bedding.
Target
You might only think of Target as a place for inexpensive college dorm room furniture, but the beloved retail chain is also a hot spot for more mature design tastes, too. Their home decor collection is based on the latest trends, featuring affordable and attractive décor items like lamps, curtains, and frames. For further savings, look for Target’s frequent clearance signs, or check our their online daily deals, which always ship for free.
Hautelook
Hautelook is a division of Nordstrom that offers discounts on name-brand designers in everything from clothing and accessories to furniture, artwork, appliances, and kitchenware. The unique thing about Hautelook is that they only runs flash sales. They will offer steep discounts (sometimes up to 80% off!) on selected items, but the sales only last for a few days. You can register with Hautelook to receive e-mails about current and upcoming sales, or you can check their website periodically for what’s currently offered and what’s scheduled for the next few days.
