A Dining Room Gets Some Personality for Under $250

White walls. Brown roller shades. A pendant light that could very well have been stolen from an interrogation room. Yep, this dining room was in dire need of some personality. Here’s how it was transformed for under $250 in a weekend:

a builder-white dining room.

Before: a builder-white dining room.

  • 2 sets of IKEA’s VIVAN curtain panels in bright orange: $20
  • IKEA KVARTAL curtain rail system: around $80
  • Chandelier from Craigslist spray painted cherry red, plus new bulbs: $70
  • Behr paint (Galactic Tint): $35

That list excludes the farmhouse style table and Eames chairs (knock-offs—a steal from Overstock), but we wanted to focus on what really made the room come to life without being too chaotic: the just enough pops of orange on the wall, the bright red chandelier, and the grey accent wall.

After: Pops of red and orange bring the room to life.
